Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Initiative
With the Walker Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation and other community partners a plan is being formulated for a pilot projet designed to break the cycle of poverty for a limited number of families.
Thanks to a grant from the Reed and Carolee Walker Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, the Family Nurturing Center, Kids Unlimited, La Clinica, and United Way partnered to create a community plan to Break the Cycle of Poverty. Using the U Theory for Profound Change, United Way along with the partnership convened community meetings to develop strategies for zero to 2 year olds, 2 to 5 year olds and 5 to 10 year olds.
Following community gatherings, meetings were held with the Perinatal Task Force, the Early Childhood Partnership Team and Jackson County Early Intervention Task Force, and the Prevention Council to further develop the strategies, create tactics and measurements. All the while, Dr. Kimberley Cox, Southern Oregon University was doing a regional and national review of best practice poverty programs across the country. Members of our community and planning group engaged in a deep, rich community process including a learning journey with the Center for Social Ecology and Economy. The plan was submitted to the Walker Fund in June 2008. The Walker Fund declined to go further with the project.
